Ritualen

 

In de Vrijmetselarij wordt overvloedig gebruik gemaakt van ritualen, vastliggende teksten, vol van symboliek, om bepaalde gebeurtenissen meer diepgang te geven.
Deze ritualen vormen één van de geheimen van de Vrijmetselarij. Publicatie van deze teksten wordt door vrijmetselaarsorganisaties fel tegengewerkt. In het verleden heeft de Deense Grootloge met succes uitzending van een televisieprogramma, waarin delen van inwijdingsritualen nagespeeld werden, weten tegen te houden. De grootste Nederlandse vrijmetselaarsorde, het Grootoosten heeft met een kort geding gedreigd om teksten van ritualen van deze site te verwijderen. Na ruim twee maanden heeft het Grootoosten eindelijk bewijzen overlegd dat zij daadwerkelijk auteursrechthebbende zijn van enkele stukken. Als reactie hierop hebben wij enkele ritualen van onze site verwijderd. Na een aanpassing, een aantal passages is nu geparafraseerd, zijn verschillende van deze ritualen weer terug op deze site.
Al sinds het begin van de Vrijmetselarij zijn publicaties verschenen met daarin (delen van)  gebruikte ritualen. Op deze site hebben Onderzoeksgroep Squin de Florian en Stichting Argus tot nu toe één van de meest volledige verzamelingen van (integrale) teksten van ritualen bijeengebracht en voor een breed publiek toegankelijk gemaakt. Daarnaast zijn deze teksten en tientallen andere ritualen ook op enkele downloads uitgebracht.

De belangrijkste vorm van ritualen gebruikt door Vrijmetselaars zijn de inwijdingsritualen. Dat zijn de ritualen waarmee een kandidaat in de Vrijmetselarij wordt ingewijd, of een Vrijmetselaar in een hogere graad of een andere orde wordt ingewijd. In deze teksten staan symbolische achtergronden die in deze graad of orde worden gebruikt, maar ook bijvoorbeeld de geheime wachtwoorden, tekens en aanrakingen.
Naast deze inwijdingsritualen wordt nog een aantal ritualen gebruikt, de zogenaamde 'toegevoegde ritualen'. Dat zijn bijvoorbeeld ritualen bij de opening van het werkjaar, de benoeming van een voorzitter of bijvoorbeeld een rouwrituaal.
De teksten van de verschillende ritualen liggen in vrij grote mate vast; de verschillende loges kunnen in zeer beperkte mate de ritualen een eigen invulling geven. In Nederland zijn slechts enkele loges die een eigen versie van ritualen mogen gebruiken. Dat geldt met name voor de Arnhemse Loge De Oude Landmerken en de Haagse Loge Hiram Abiff. In Rotterdam is een loge die geheel in het Engels werkt en gebruik maakt van een Engels rituaal, het zogenaamde 'Emulation Ritual'.
