Résumé of the Degree of Sublime Prince of the Royal Secret, 32°
The candidate is told on
admission that having passed through the cavern of self-control and study, to
the performance of higher moral efforts through the teachings of the 31°.
he is now called to more strenuous duties, the cultivation and perfection of the
mind: that the decision of what is just and right require that he should carry
into the world as an active combatant the moral precepts he has learnt and the
details to which he has applied them.
He is reminded that
although we meet in peace, the turmoils of the world disturb our quiet: that the
needs of humanity are insistent and we dare not ignore them. He is warned of the
disloyalty that lurks in idleness, the treachery that abides in sloth.
Sublime Princes of the Royal Secret should regard themselves
as encamped, prepared for action, often subject to attacks from the strong, ever
responsive to the claims of the weak.
The candidate takes the obligation, which is identical to
that signed by those who take the 32°
by patent.
The candidate is then placed before the tracing board and the
following lecture is given: “The original purpose of this degree contemplated
the invasion of the Holy Land for the purpose of delivering it from the sway of
the infidels.
The camp of the invading army was to be constructed in the
following manner: The exterior was a nonagon within
which was a heptagon: within that a pentagon, which in its turn surrounded an
equilateral triangle, within which was a circle.
At the points of the
pentagon were five standards and on the sides of the nonagon were nine tents
with banners. The space within the circle was set apart for the chiefs of the
army.
Now mark the standards on
the pentagon, which show the lion, winged heart, eagle, and ox,
denoting fire, water, air, and earth, and reminding us of the visions of the
Prophet Ezekiel and the Apocalypse of St. John the Divine, whilst unveiled with
them is the fifth standard, showing the Ark of the Covenant, which may well give
to the camp the name which Ezekiel gave to the New Jerusalem. ‘The Lord is
there’.
This tracing board dates
from the middle of the eighteenth century, when this degree formed the
twenty-fifth and Final Degree of the Rite of Perfection. and you will notice the
truly masonic significance of these figures, represented by the numbers 1, 3, 5,
7, 9, which added together make 25, thus securing to the Brethren of each degree
their proper place in the grand masonic army. Further than this, the circle
represents infinity, and the numbers 3, 5, 7, 9, all symbolise divine attributes
and masonic principles. So shall masonic labour emanate from divine love, be
directed by divine wisdom, and be exercised in divine power, for the glory of
God and the blessing of man.
This tracing board
remained unaltered when in 1801 the Rite was extended by 33 degrees, of which
this degree is now the 32nd, and unfortunately we have no
satisfactory record left to us of the original explanation of the letters which
you see on the nonagon and pentagon. These letters form the triple word of the
degree and are read thus S.. N.. T..
They are used by us to
signify the rallying of the wise Brethren who have been separated until now.
Indeed the chief thought
of the degree is re-union after separation.
There were likewise P.W.s,
and answers for every day of the week. and the names of commanders associated
with the various banners, but I need not now trouble you with these different
names. suffice it to say, that if this was the arrangement of the camp. what is
more important to us now, is the symbolic teaching of the degree, which
signifies the organisation of all members of the A.& A. Rite into one great
harmonious army of reformers, soldiers of virtue, morality and truth, to war
against vice, ignorance, and error in all their forms and everywhere, and to
become benefactors to the whole world.
You have in this degree
once more passed to the militant branch of the Order, and while the sword would
hardly seem the fitting weapon with which to fight against vice, ignorance and
error, those three prime causes of separation, yet
remember that masonry is above all symbolic, and the sword, purified by fire, is
essentially the emblem of truth, and ‘tis truth that makes us free. and freedom
brings once more, reunion.
All men therefore may be
proud to serve in the grand army of the Ancient and Accepted Rite
It is not given to all
men to bear arms in the front line for the nation’s defence, although many
members of the Order have been privileged to do so, but every man may cherish
his country’s name with a devoted enthusiasm, may support his country’s laws
with a willing obedience, and may so live day by day that the common welfare may
be prospered through his industry, established through his fidelity, and
honoured through his integrity. Man owes it to himself and to his fellow men to
be his own best self. Public spirit thus founded and secured gives assurance of
peace within our borders and is a harbinger of happiness widespread over the
world at large.
And when we enlist for
such service, do not let us forget that it may involve sacrifice.
You are now about to he
proclaimed as a Sublime Prince of the Royal Secret and you may well ask ‘What is
the Royal Secret’?’
All men have the Royal
Secret within themselves. It is the eternal gift of God: Love.
It is incarnate in us
since man first became a living soul. We must cherish it as a divine attribute
and as a priceless birthright
Blessed is he that is so
possessed of the Royal Secret that he will resist the allurements of pleasure.
and the promptings of selfish interest when they encroach upon the sacred
obligations of the love of his fellow-men.
Happy is he who hears the
call for his energies, even when not addressed directly to himself, and
recognising it as a divine call for labour, accepts it proudly as his accolade
of knighthood.
Remembering this. I
welcome you today, my Brother as a Sublime Prince of the Royal Secret and I
shall have much pleasure in investing you as such.”
The candidate is invested
with his regalia, by the S G.C. who then communicates the S. and W.
He is then conducted to the W. and duly proclaimed by the G.D.C. in his new title.
