member of the Order of the Eastern Star in good standing? Respond
(If a Master Mason) Are you a Master Mason in good and regular
standing? Respond
Strangers, your answers to these important
questions and other information which has been presented in your behalf, merit
my recommending you for admission. You will wait until I communicate with the
Worthy High Priestess and obtain permission to guide you on your way.
W.Guide advances to entrance door
of Shrine and gives raps. W.Guardian ascertains the cause of the alarm in
regular way, and reports FROM the DOOR to the W.H.P.
W.Guardian: Worthy High Priestess, the alarm was caused by the Worthy Guide returning
with her report.
W.H.P.: You will admit her.
W.Guardian opens door, W.Guide
re-enters shrine and advances on the same line as she retired, east and north,
to position back of First H.M.’s station, gives salutation sign.
W.Guide: Worthy High Priestess, I find in waiting (sister
or brother, giving names), members of the Order of the Eastern Star,
and (giving names) Master Masons, in good
and regular standing, who desire to receive the degree of the Order of the White
Shrine of Jerusalem.
If any of the strangers are
Master Masons, the W.Guide does not use the word “Brother” in referring to
them. Use the words designated in Ritual when referring to members of the Order
of the Eastern Star. Do not mention both sisters and brothers unless both are in
waiting.
W.H.P.: Worthy Guide, by what tight do they seek this high honor?
W.Guide: Being firm believers in the Christian religion, they desire to become
true followers of the new-born King.
W.H.P.: Worthy Scribe.
W.Scribe: Worthy High Priestess.
W.H.P.: Have these strangers been elected to receive the degree of the Order of
the White Shrine of Jerusalem?
W.Scribe: They have, Worthy High Priestess.
W.H.P.: It is well. Worthy Guide, you will retire and prepare the strangers for
the ceremony of initiation.
W.Guide marches north, then west
on line outside tent of W.Men, to preparation room and retires. After the
strangers have been prepared, W.Guide gives raps ** * **
on preparation room door.
W.Shep.: Worthy High Priestess, there is an alarm at the door of the preparation
room.
W.H.P.: You will ascertain the cause of the alarm and report.
W.Shep. takes crook in right hand
as she rises, grounds crook, reports alarm to W.H.P., and after order is given
advances to aisle and marches west to west aisle, then north and west to
preparation room door, answers the alarm, giving raps, opens door
W.Shep.: Worthy Guide, who knocks at the door of our Shrine?
W.Guide: Christians, who seek tidings of the new-born King.
W.Shep.: Who vouches for them?
W.Guide: I do.
W.Shep.: Worthy Guide, have you the pass?
W.Guide: I have.
W.Shep.: You will advance and communicate it.
W.Guide advances and communicates
the pass and grip to W.Shep. W.Guide places her crook at ease to give grip.
W.Shep. does not change crook at the door; she places it at ease on right
shoulder as she receives pass and grip.
W.Shep.: It is well. Strangers,, since you come walking in the true light, tarry
here with your Guide while I report to the Worthy High Priestess.
W.Shep closes door, advances east
and south on same line W. Guide retired, taking position back of First H.M’s
chair, gives salutation sign and reports.
W.Shep.: Worthy High Priestess, the alarm was caused by the Worthy Guide, who is
accompanied by strangers seeking admission to the mysteries and privileges of
our Order.
W.H.P.: Worthy Shepherdess, have they complied with the necessary requirements?
W.Shep.: They have, Worthy High Priestess.
W.H.P.: You will admit them.
After order is given to admit the
strangers, LIGHTS ARE DIMMED.
W. Shep. returns on the same
line, opens door (no raps) of preparation room and changes crook to left hand.
This change is so that she can offer her right arm to the stranger whom she
escorts. She does not change crook from left hand during initiation until after
the proclamation has been made.
W.Shep.: Worthy Guide, it is the order of the Worthy High Priestess that these
strangers be admitted, that you see that their footsteps do not falter by the
wayside and that the revelations of the coming of the King are fully disclosed to
them.
Song: ”There Are Strangers at
Our Door.” Tune, “There Is a Stranger at the Door.” It is more impressive
to have candidates remain at the door.
W.H P. calls up the Shrine (* *
*) as Candidates enter the Shrine room in two’s, the first candidate taking
the W.Shep.’s right arm and the last candidate taking the W.Guide’s left
arm. March east to west aisle, then south, halt in front of W.C. If class is
large, divide in as many rows as may be necessary. W.Shep. at the south end of
west dais on the front row. W.Guide at north end on back row. When in position,
the W.C. speaks.
W.C.: No pecson should enter upon any important undertaking without first
asking the blessing of God. Strangers, you will therefore attend prayer.
W.C.: Thou great and glorious Ruler of the Universe, grant, we beseech Thee,
Thy blessing upon these strangers. Endue them with Divine Wisdom and strength in
all their undertakings. May they continue in all good work to Thy honor and
glory, and to benefit mankind. Amen.
After W.C.’s prayer, members,
in unison, respond “Amen.”
W.H.P. seats Shrine (*) after
word “Amen.” W.C. pauses until members are seated.
W.C.: Strangers, learn a new lesson, that Heaven may be won, not by the sword,
nor by human wisdom, but by faith, love and good works. Worthy Shepherdess, you
will present these strangers to the Noble Prophetess.
W.Shep.: Noble Prophetess, rises I present
to you these strangers, believers in Jesus Christ, who seek tidings of the
newborn King, and desire to receive the sublime degree of the Order of the
White Shrine of Jerusalem.
N.P.: Worthy Shepherdess, do they come properly prepared to receive this high
honor?
W.Shep.: They do, Noble Prophetess.
N.P.: Strangers, I bid you welcome. Do you desire to proceed?
Strangers: I do.
N.P.: You will face the east.
Pause until strangers have faced
east and are in proper position. W.Shep. position at right of first row, W.Guide
at left of last row. The W.H.P. does not rise when addressed by N.P.: Worthy High Priestess, I present to you these strangers who seek tidings
of the new-born King.
W.H.P.: It is well. N.P. is seated. Worthy
Shepherdess, you will conduct the strangers to our sacred Altar, where they will
kneel, and assume the obligation of the Order of the White Shrine of Jerusalem.
W.Shep, strangers and W.Guide
advance east, halt on a line between Altar and station of the First H.M., facing
east. W.Shep. then instructs, aloud, strangers to kneel at Altar, place left
hand on the Bible, and right hand over heart. When it is impossible for all
strangers to kneel on the west, south and north sides of the Altar, W.Shep.,
assisted by W.Guide, will cause the remaining strangers to kneel, place the
right hand over the heart and left hand on the left shoulder of the stranger in
front of them; thus making a direct chain to the Bible. W.Shep. and W.Guide each
take one step back, W.Guide facing south and W.Shep. north, with crooks
grounded.
W.Shep.: Worthy Chaplain, the strangers are in proper posit ion to receive the
obligation.
W.Shep. turns face toward W.C.
when addressing her, W.Shep. and W.Guide face each other and remain in this
position until the W.C. says, “Sojourners Arise.”
W.C. attended by W.H., proceeds
on the same line as hereinbefore instructed, except they advance to line east of
Third H.M.’s station, then south. W.H.P. (***) calls up Shrine as W.H. and W.C.
turn south. W.H. and W.C. turn square corners, walk to line in center of Altar,
lower hands, and both face west at the same time. W.C. advances to the Altar.
W.H. remains in position back of W.C. at the point where she faced west. Second
and Third H.M.’s face north and south respectively during obligation, same as
during prayer.
W.C.: You will say I, pronounce your name and repeat after me:
Obligation
(See Secret Work.)
After Obligation – before
explaining Emblem:
W.C.:
Sojourners arise.
Remain standing.
W.H.P.: * seats the Shrine.
W.C. explains the Emblem to the
candidates.
W.C.: Sojourners the Emblem of the Order of the White Shrine of Jerusalem
consists of the Star, the Shepherd’s Crook and the Cross.
When W.C. concludes the
obligation, she says, “Sojourners, the Emblem,” etc. At the word Emblem, she
points toward the emblem as it lies on the Bible, with her right hand, until she
concludes with the word Cross. W.C. places her right hand on top of Emblem,
slides the fingers of her left hand underneath it, and lifts it from the Bible,
turning the right hand palm upward with the Emblem thereon nearly on a level
with the elbow. With her left hand she takes first the Star, explains its
significance, replaces it on the Bible in its proper Position; then Shepherd’s
Crook, explains its significance, replaces it in its proper Position; then the
Cross, explains its significance, holding it in position until she comes to the
words, “in this sign is my hope,” when it is raised at arms length, the eyes
cast upward, and held in this position, while one verse of “In the Cross of
Christ I Glory” is sung, and then replaced slowly to its proper position on
the Bible. When explaining parts of Emblem, hold on a level with the eyes.
W.C.: The Star reminds us of the One who led the Shepherds and the Wise Men to
the birthplace of our Saviour. The Shepherd’s Crook reminds us that the Great
Shepherd who knoweth His flock, will ever lead them in green pastures and beside
the still waters. The Cross teaches us that through His suffering and death, and
by reliance on His promises, His children may gain eternal life. Our motto is:
“In Hoc Signo Spes Mea,” which being interpreted signifies: ”In this sign
is my hope.” (Song)
W.C. steps back in line with W H,
both face north, places her right hand in the left hand of W.H, and they return
to their stations in the west.
W.H.P: Sojourners, in the ceremonies of the Order of the White Shrine of
Jerusalem we attempt to portray the sacred scenes attending the birth of the
Saviour of the World. We aim to lead all thoughtful pilgrims back over the ages
that are past and present to them the ideas concerning the beautiful White
Shrine around which clusters all we know of sacred history and thus cause them
to feel that Sublime emotion which each human heart must experience when the
mind contemplates the handiwork of the Great Creator.
Sojourners, follow your Guide, fear not, and may
the God of our Fathers ever guide you on your way.
W.Shep. and W.Guide conduct
Sojourners in single file south, then east, and are seated in the Queen’s
Attendants chairs.
“Wise Men of the Orient,” or
“Three Kings of the Orient,” is sung as a cue for Wise Men to enter.
Wise Men enter, unannounced. In a
wandering and irregular manner, Manetho enters from the ante-room door; he scans
the horizon as he looks for the star; Alchor enters from the preparation room
door. They approach each other and give their signs.
If there are no doors in the
directions in which the W.Men and W.O.S. are instructed to enter, they may enter
while lights are dimmed as candidates are taking positions at W.C.’s station.
Then proceed to proper positions for their entrance.
ALCHOR’S SIGN: Both hands
touching forehead: bows. Brings hands down as he bows.
MANETHO’S SIGN: Left arm
extended upward: bows, bringing arm to side as bow is completed.
Alchor: Peace be unto thee.
As Alchor speaks First H.M.
leaves her station, goes to well.
Manetho: And unto thee and thy house. Who art thou?
During their dialogue they wander
toward line running midway between the southeast corner of Tent and First
H.M.’s station. As they finish their dialogue, they are standing just west of
the line mentioned.
Alchor: I am Alchor from India, and thou?
Manetho: I am Manetho, an Egyptian. I have traveled far and have stopped to rest.
Tarry and rest with me.
Alchor: Praise be to Jehovah and thanks to thee.
There they greet Gaspar who is
wandering toward them from the northeast corner of the room, and finish their
dialogue.
Manetho: Behold! Another Sojourner. Hail, stranger, by thy garb thou art a Greek.
Who art thou?
Gaspar gives his sign. GASPAR’S
SIGN: Hands clasped at waist, bow, lowering hands at side as bow is completed.
Manetho and Alchor respond with
their individual signs.
Gaspar: I am Gaspar from Athens, and am weary with travel, having followed the
course of the Star to this place.
Alchor: Oh, the wonder of it. I, too, have been guided here by the same Star.
Gaspar: A vision came to me in far off Greece, and I forsook all for this new
Redeemer of the World.
Manetho: Praise be to Thee, Oh God, I have traveled far on the same mission. In a
dream it was revealed to me that I should meet two others who will journey with
me.
Gaspar: Strange is this, indeed: an Egyptian, a Hindu, and a Greek, all directed
to this place by the same unseen power. It surely is the handiwork of God. Let
us journey on.
Manetho: Friends, before setting out on so important a journey, it is fitting for
us to kneel in prayer. Almighty and everlasting God, from whom cometh every good
and perfect gift, we praise Thee and magnify Thy great and Holy Name. We
devoutly thank Thee for all Thy mercies and for guiding us through the desert of
life: Be Thou our Guide as we travel on and until we reach that wonderful land
whither we journey. Amen and Amen.
Three W. Men kneel in prayer.
Manetho faces east, looks up with aims extended in supplication, as he prays.
Alchor and Gaspar assume natural positions. Wise Men do not touch each other.
As prayer is completed W.Men and
H M.’s move in unison as follows: First H.M. leaves well for her station, the
Second and Third H.M.’s leave their stations, meeting at the well as if
conversing.
W.Men wander toward the south and
the station of First H.M. and halt. H.M.’s face south during dialogue.
Manetho: Peace be unto thee, oh daughter of Judea.
First H.M.: Hail, stranger! Who art thou, and whither art thou journeying?
Manetho: Meek and humble pilgrims are we from the far east. We have seen the Star
and have come to worship Him who is born King of the Jews, as prophesied in the
Book of the Law.
First H.M.: Nay, my friend, thou dost wrongly interpret the law. Herod alone is King
of the Jews. Accept this from an Hebrew Maid and return from whence thou camest.
Second H.M. fills her jug and
leaves the well on cue of “and return from whence thou camest.”
Manetho: I doubt not Jehovah leads.
Alchor: I, also, am determined to go on. Let us be on Our way.
As Manetho and Alchor speak the
First H.M. places her jug and is seated.
W.Men continue on way to Second
H.M.
Gaspar: Peace be unto thee, daughter of Judea.
Second H.M.: Hail, stranger! Who art thou and whither art thou journeying?
Gaspar: Meek and humble pilgrims are we, and from the furthermost parts of the
earth are we come in search of Him who is born King of the Jews, and whose birth
in Bethlehem of Judea the ancient prophets so dearly foretold.
Second H.M.: Nay, my friend! Thou dost fail to understand the prophets. Our Herod,
mighty Herod, is King of the Jews. Return unto thine own land, and thine own
people and pursue not further this idle tale, and carry with thee the blessings
of thy servant, this Hebrew maid.
Third H.M. fills her jug and
leaves well on cue of “and carry with thee the blessings of thy servant, this
Hebrew maid.”
Gaspar: We are again advised to turn from our pursuit but my faith has not
weakened.
Manetho: There is our star still guiding us. Let us continue to follow as long as
it remains in sight.
As Gaspar and Manetho speak the
Second H.M. places her jug and is seated.
W.Men continue on way to Third
H.M.
Alchor: Peace be unto thee, daughter of Judea.
Third H.M.: Hail, stranger! Who art thou, and whither art thou journeying?
Alchor: Meek and humble pilgrims are we who have traveled many miles over desert
and plains, following a wonderful star which the prophets have told us will
guide us to Him who is born King of the Jews. While this wonderful star appeared
to me in far off India, it also appeared to these brothers in Africa and in
Greece and has guided us to this place.
Third H.M: Nay, my brother, this wonderful star of thine is but an idle dream. See!
The heavens are full of these sparkling gems, set there by the God of Abraham,
Isaac and Jacob, our father’s God, who made our mighty Herod King of the Jews.
Go, my brother, and may peace be with thee.
Alchor: A third time we are advised to turn back. But the prophets of old cannot
be mistaken. Our visions have not been in vain.
Gaspar: My friends, to turn back now would be mockery to our God. We shall find
for ourselves that these things are true.
As Alchor and Gaspar speak the
Third H M. places her jug and is seated.
If Kahn is used the W.Men, in
reverent manner, approach Kahn bearing gifts. They leave with bowed heads, step
backward, turn, continue to tent, enter in single file, Manetho leading and
retire within. Enter from east end of tent. Lights.
N.P. rises when candidates rise.
Candidates ate led in single file north in east aisle, where they halt to
receive lecture of N.P. Lights.
N.P.: Ye daughters and sons of men, who take for your guidance Bethlehem’s
Star, give heed to the story of the Wise Men who told it in Jerusalem to my
kinsman.
RITUAL TO BE GIVEN VERBATIM.
After N P. has spoken, W.Shep.
conducts the Sojourn. ers north and west to chairs east of W.Guide’s station,
halts with each standing in front of chair. She walks on diagonal line
southeast, about three steps, in order to face candidates, and speaks.
W.Shep.: We now approach the tent of the Wise Men. Let us hail them and hear their
story.
W.Shep. resumes station at head
of line and attracts attention of W. Men by striking crook (** * **). Three
W.Men in single file step from east side of tent to a position in front of their
stations outside tent, W.Men then execute wheel; Gaspar the pivot.
They salute W.Shep. using
individual signs as previously described.
Manetho: The spirit of, God be with thee, daughter. Why art thou so far from
Bethlehem’s plains and its flocks?
W.Shep.: Most Noble Prince, I am conducting these sojourners to the new-born King.
They would hear thy story.
As Manetho speaks, W.H. goes to
preparation room door at the words “and its flocks.”
There should be no delay. W.H.
must be governed by distance to travel making sure the door is opened at
specified time.
At the words, “Hear thy
story” W.H. opens door ready for Courier to enter. If possible, suitable call
is given from preparation room. Courier runs in. Courier gives salutation sign,
speaks, then walks to a position near station of First H.M., remaining in
position until King waves scepter, as her signal to retire to preparation room.
Courier: Worthy High Priestess, the King approaches.
W.H.P., *** calls up Shrine. (as
King enters)
Escorts for King precede him,
after passing Third H.M.’s station, open order for King to pass. As King waves
scepter, King’s Guards countermatch to the W. Guide’s station, then to
seats.
As King enters through
preparation room door, all officers stand with heads bowed. Three H.M.’s and
Courier face north. W. Men wheel back to positions in front of stations., King
marches east in north aisle. When King reaches point opposite Courier: )
Courier: Behold the King.
King advances to his station at
right of W.H.P., is seated, salutes with wave of scepter. King remains seated
during work.
W.H.P. seats Shrine (*). W.Men
remain standing. Courier runs in with message to King and kneels before him. He
accepts, reads, and retains message, then dismisses Courier with a wave of the
scepter.
King: It has come to our knowledge, my people, that within a few hours three
Princes from foreign lands have invaded our kingdom and set up a new King. Yea!
Within these very walls they have dared to pitch their tent, and thou, Most
Worthy High Priestess, knowest thou aught of this?
W.H.P., rises: bows: Oh, King! What thou hast heard is in part true. There are among us three
travelers, from foreign lands, who within the hour have herein pitched their
tent and were about to tell their story when thou didst appear. What is thy
Majesty’s pleasure?
King: Let them tell their story.
At the words “Majesty’s
pleasure” W.H. again goes to door, ready for Courier to enter; make sure there
is no delay.
King speaks at this time.
W.Men wheel to position, three
abreast facing east, as though to tell their story. They are interrupted by
announcement of the Queen which causes them to wheel back in positions in front
of stations. Suitable call is given in anteroom, at the words “Their story,”
W.H. opens door and Courier enters in same manner as instructed for King.
Courier (salutation sign): Worthy High Priestess, the Queen approaches.
Queen’s Attendants enter
through dooi of preparation room, proceed east to the meeting point of north and
west aisles, thence diagonally toward station of W. Shep., where they form open
ordes, thence diagonally east to foot of dais.
W.H.P. calls up Shrine (***), as
Queen enters. All officers stand with bowed heads; Three H.M.’s and Courier
facing south. As last couple of Queen’s Attendants in the procession approach
the W. Shep.’s station, Flower Girls, Queen, Matrons and Maids of Honor enter,
in order given. They march on line prescribed for Queen’s Attendants, thence
along aisle formed by Attendants in open order toward foot of dais. As Queen passes:
Courier: Behold our noble Queen.
Courier steps into line at end of
possession, marches to west end of open column of Queen’s Attendants, remains
there, facing east, until Queen is in position at her station.
Flower Girls, after passing
through Queen’s Attendants aisle, take positions at head of lines, and halts.
Queen, when near foot of dais,
pauses, salutes the W.H.P., who descends from dais and with left hand takes left
hand of Queen and escorts her to her station at left of W.H.P. As Queen moves to
ascend dais, Matrons and Maids of Honor proceed to a point east of Flower Girls,
then take positions in the lines. Both lines face east, as Queen ascends dais
When Queen reaches her station, all Attendants, led by the Matrons of Honor,
countermarch west to the Courier, who leads them in single file to their
stations
W.H.P.:
*, seats Shrine.
QUEEN AND ATTENDANTS REMAIN
STANDING.
Queen: Your Majesty, and Worthy High Priestess, I have heard that within this
temple are the Magi, three Princes of other lands, with a wonderful story of the
coming King. I fain would hear them.
King: Let the Magi speak.
Queen and Attendants are seated.
Attendants remgin seated during the Queen’s Lecture.
W. Men who have been standing in
front of their stations, wheel and march three abreast to the line east of the
Third H.M.’s station, where they halt. Manetho advances east not more than
three steps.
Manetho, bowing: O, King! In myself and companions thou beholdest the descendants of three
mighty races of the peoples of the earth. How we came here, let our story tell.
My brother, Gaspar, who came last, will speak first.
The Three W. Men give their
individual sign as they speak before the King.
Gaspar advances on a diagonal
line southeast to a point in front of Manetho’s position. As Gaspar moves,
Alchos and Manetho sidestep LEFT; leaving the position directly back of Gaspar
unoccupied.
Gaspar: I am a native of the land of Greece, a citizen of Athens. My people were
a nation of scholars, from whom I inherited a passionate desire for knowledge.
While pursuing my studies, there came into my hands a portion of an old Hebrew
manuscript which caused me to doubt the belief of my people With time the, doubt
increased. At length in some unaccountable manner, I was impelled to forsake the
temple of learning and the homes of civilization, for the wilderness and the
mountains. While fasting and praying to God, for a revelation of Himself, there
strayed one day to the solitude of my mountain home a Hebrew who had been cast
ashore, from a wrecked ship, on the coast of the Thermaic Gulf. In conversing
with this Jew, I became convinced that the God of my prayers did exist and had
been to the Jews from the beginning a lawgiver, a King and a Ruler of Heaven and
Earth. Before departing he told me that the prophets of his people, who in ages
past talked to God, had declared that He would appear upon earth again, coming
as a great King, who would bring all people of the worid under subjection to
Him; and it was deemed that even now the time for His appearing was at hand. My
soul was thrilled.
Did not the statements of the Jew accord with those
contained in the manuscript I had read! My prayer now became a devout desire to
see the King when He came and worship Him. That night I awoke from my slumbers
to find the cave in which I slept filled with a light brighter than that of the
sun. I heard a yoke say, “Son of Athens, thy faith and thy prayers have
conquered. Thou shalt see the Redeemer. Arise, follow the light of the spirit
which will guide thee.” I laid aside the garb of a hermit, resumed the dress
of my people and set forth upon my journey. On emerging from the cave, I beheld
a star of great brilliance above my head, which seemed to precede and guide me.
It led me to the shores of the sea, where I signaled a ship that was passing,
was received on board and landed at Antioch. With the spirit still guiding, I
traveled, following the Orantes to Damascus, thence on to our meeting in the
desert. Such is my story.
Gaspar steps backward into the
unoccupied position, Alchor advances on the diagonal line prescribed for Gaspar.
Manetho and Gaspar sidestep LEFT; again leaving the unoccupied position back of
the speaker.
Alchor: I am a Hindu, and as such was reared and taught the doctrines of Brahma.
Beautiful as these teachings are, they but made me a heretic. I became as one
groping in a dark valley, but far above I beheld the light and sought to climb
the heights and learn its beauties. After a weary struggle, I reached the summit
and stood in the light of perfect day. There I learned the secret which binds
the soul to God: Love: and in this secret found the true principle of life. For
daring to speak of it, I was made an outcast. In the temple I appealed to the
disciples of Brahma. They cast me out from among them. The people by the
wayside, to whom I endeavored to reveal the truth, stoned and cursed me. I fled,
for they sought my life. I tried to find a place of safety among the miserable
outcasts of the desert, but even their hands were raised against me. In all
India, there was not a place of safety for me. In the agony of my soul I turned
to God and sought solitude. I followed the River Ganges to its fountain head,
toiling up the mountains of the Himalayas to where three mighty rivers rise to
run their way. There I dwelt in solitude with God, patiently waiting for death,
praying and fasting. One night I stood and communed with the silence. “When
will this end? When will God claim his own? Will there be a redemption?”
Suddenly, out of the waters at my feet a star arose from the surface and stood
above my head. Its brilliancy stunned me. I fell to the earth. While I lay there
I heard a voice infinitely sweet saying, “Son of India, thy faith and thy love
have conquered. Thou art blessed indeed; for thou, with two others whom I have
chosen from the farthest parts of the earth, shall see the Redeemer, and witness
for Him. Arise, go meet them. Let thy trust be in the spirit which shall guide
thee.” In the morning I commenced my return to the world, fearing naught, for
the spirit was with me and dwells with me even now. My brethren! What glory is
ours, for we have seen the Redeemer of the World, and have worshipped Him. Such
is my story.
Alchor steps backward into the
unoccupied position. Manetho advances as instructed brother W.Men. Gaspar and
Alcho sidestep LEFT.
Manetho: Your Majesty and Most Noble Queen, I am Manetho, the Egyptian. If I were
to claim distinction for my race, scarce would I know where to begin, for
history has its origin with us. Mine were the people first to establish records.
On monuments and the inner walls of tombs, on temples and palaces, they engraved
names of our kings and what they did. In these records we find the origin and
religion of my people. My brother, Gaspar, older than the Iliad and the Odyssey
the sublime verse of Homer the blind poet of thy land; Oh, Alchor! Older than
the Vedas of Para-Brahm, older than the Hebrew Genesis, oldest of all
established record are the writings of Menes, the first Egyptian King True
religion is that recognized law which unites man to his Creator. God is good,
and goodness is perfection. The divinity of this law is childlike in its
simplicity.
In the cities I preached this. My hearers, at
first, seemed to wonder, then they mocked and laughed at me, then in frenzy
hurled blasphemy at my God and filled my heaven with darkness. I fled from the
haunts of men and sought solace in prayer. Into the remotest regions of unknown
Africa I went, beyond the fifth cataract where the waters meet in Sennar. One
night I stood on the shores of an inland sea and in the agony of my soul I
prayed, “O, Thou Great Creator! May I not see the redemption? When, O Lord,
wilt Thou come ?“ The sea was brilliant with the reflection of sparkling
stars, one of which seemed slowly to rise until it stood over my head. I fell
upon the ground and hid my face. Then I heard a voice not of earth say,
“Blessed art thou, son of Mizraim! Thy Faith and thy works have conquered.
With two others, from the farthest parts of the earth, thou shalt see the
Redeemer and testify for Him. Arise, go meet them. Put thy trust in the spirit
and it will guide thee. And when ye are all come to the holy city of Jerusalem,
ye shall say to the people, “Where is He that is born King of the Jews, for we
have seen His Star in the east, and are come to worship him?” I was led by the
spirit down the river to Memphis, through the lands of Moab and Ammon. God is
with us, my brethren, for His Star has guided us to our meeting place on the
desert; then to the Holy City and the Khan, where we found the child Jesus
wrapped in swaddling clothes and lying in a manger. Hark! Hear the shepherds of
the plains singing tribute of praise to the new-born King. Glory to God in the
Highest. Soft vocal music.
Manetho steps backward into line
to his original position.
King: Sons of Egypt, India and Greece, thy speech hath a ring of truth about
it, but also that of treason; and I find no just cause why ye should not be
deemed guilty of that offense and punished with death. Ye have entered our
kingdom and dared publicly to proclaim a new King. Hear thy sentence!
Queen, rising hurriedly, speaks: O, King! Just and upright ruler, hear me, thy Queen, in behalf of these
innocent men. If thou wouldst take their lives for doing the will of the Most
High, first, go out into the night. Hark! What sound is it that sweeps across
the desert like the rustling of leaves in the twilight? But on and on it goes
apace, increasing each moment until the mighty giants of the forest are lashed
against each other in awful fury. The ocean is caught in its mighty grasp, and
in seething foam the waters are converted into mountain waves, lashing each
other in awful grandeur. From crest to crest leap sheets of dazzling flames,
while ‘midst it all the very firmament trembles with volley after volley of
thunder. Who, then, O King, will doubt the power of the Great Jehovah? Come,
King Herod, mighty ruler of men, step forth, say to the winds, “Stop”; to
the roaring billows of the ocean, “Be calm”; to the flashing lightning and
resounding thunder, “Be still.” Do this, O King, then mayest thou dispute
the will of the Most High. The story of these men tells us that the spirit of
God whispered to one in the mountains of Africa, to another in dark India, and
to a third in warlike Greece, “Go, I will lead you to a new King, a Savior of
men, One born to rule, not by the sword, but by faith, love and goad works.”
King: Who but Herod may be King of the Jews while Rome endures?
Queen: Canst thou not see, O King, that the spirit of God is directing these men
to a Spiritual King, a Redeemer, a Savior, a Teacher of mankind? Withhold thy
sentence, O King Herod, and welcome these just men among us. Queen
kneels.
Thy Queen so implores thee.
After deliberation, King extends
scepter to Queen to arise.
King: Let the decree so be. Our most noble Queen has cleared the mist from mine
eyes and I see no harm in these men. Princes of the Magi, we bid ye welcome.
Report to us aught else ye may learn of this coming Redeemer.
Queen remains standing while King
talks. At conclusion of his speech, she returns to her station and is seated.
Manetho speaks facing east.
Manetho: Your Majesty and Sojourners, may the Holy Light of Bethlehem’s Star
guide you to Him: the Savior and
Redeemer of the World.
W.Men bow, take one step
backward, about face march west. When near their stations, wheel into single
file with Manetho leading, retire within the tent and are sealed.
W.Shep., W.Guide and Sojourners
rise. W.Shep. addresses them from the same position as before.
W.Shep.: Now that we have heard this wondrous story, let us onward, that we may
hear tidings of my people, the shepherds. Dim lights.
W.Shep. conducts Sojourners
through Tent of W.Men thence south, and east to station of W.O.S. This point is
three steps west of Queen’s chair.
W.O.S.: Stay! Who comes to Bethlehem’s plains on which we guard our flocks?
W.Shep.: Sojourners, who seek tidings of the new-born King.
Candidates face north. W.O.S.
stands midway in space east of Second H.M. and dais to give lecture.
W.O.S.: Glorious are the tidings I have to tell. From me, humble shepherd, shalt
ye hear the story of the birth of that thrice-blessed babe, the Redeemer and
Savior of men, as it was revealed to us by a multitude of angels. ‘Midst a
scene of starlit grandeur I stood on Bethlehem’s plains guarding the sheep
fold, in which our flocks were sheltered. My companions slept. The night was
clothed in winter’s beauty.
The stillness was more than silence. It was a Holy
hush, a warning that Heaven was stooping low to whisper some sweet thoughts to
listening earth. At last the midnight came. My watch was done. As I moved toward
the watch fire, a light seemed to break about me, white, ‘yet soft like that
of the moon. I waited breathlessly. The light brightened, until things before
invisible came into view. I saw before me the vast plain and all it contained. I
looked up. The stars were gone. The light radiated as from a window in the sky,
and as I looked it became a splendor. Then in terror I cried, “Awake!
Shepherds, awake!” My companions sprang to their feet weapons in hand. “What
is it?” they asked. “See! the sky is on fire.” Suddenly the light became
intolerably bright. We covered our eyes and sank upon our knees, then fell on
our faces, and would have died of fear had not a voice infinitely sweet said,
“Fear not, for behold I bring you tidings of great joy which shall be to all
people.” At the sound of that voice all fear vanished. We arose, and beheld in
the center of a great glory the appearance of a man, clad in a robe intensely
white; above his shoulders towered the tops of wings, folded and glistening in
pearly whiteness. His hands stretched toward us in blessing, his face serene and
divinely beautiful. Directly the angel continued: “For unto you is born this
day in the city of David, a Savior, which is Christ the Lord.” Again there was
a pause while the words sank deep into our hearts. “And this shall be a sign
unto you, ye shall find the Babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a
manger.” Then up as far as we could see there was flashing of wings, and
coming and going of radiant forms, while voices as of a great multitude chanted
in unison, “Glory to God in the highest, and on earth, peace, good-will toward
men.” Not once the praise, but many times. Then the angel with his face raised
toward heaven, spread his wings, and as he disappeared from view the refrain of
angel voices was still borne toward earth: “Glory to God in the highest, and
on earth peace, good-will toward men.” When we recovered from our spellbound
awe, we said with one accord: “It was Gabriel, Gods messenger to man. Christ
the Lord is born, said he not so?”
“Did he not also say that in the city of David,
which is our Bethlehem yonder, we should find the Babe wrapped in swaddling
clothes and lying in a manger ?“ Then said I to my companions, “Brethren,
let us go and see that which has come to pass. For many years our prophets have
told us of the coming Redeemer; now He is come. God has given us a sign by which
to know Him. Let us go and worship Him.” There was but one place in Bethlehem
with mangers, the Khan. Thither we went at once with joy, found the Babe and did
worship Him. Throughout Bethlehem and all the way back to the plains we chanted
the refrain of the angels, “Glory to God in the highest, and on earth, peace,
good-will toward men.”
Worthy Shepherdess, you will now conduct these
sojourners to the Noble Prophetess in the West.
Lights.
W.O S., after lecture, steps
forward to Queen’s chair and remains standing until after W.Guide has passed,
then is seated.
W.Shep. conducts Sojourners to
N.P. but does not pass through tent.
W.Shep.: Noble Prophetess, these sojourners have passed through the tent of the
Wise Men, crossed the plains, and now seek further knowledge of the King.
N.P.: Sojourners you have heard the wondrous story of the Wise Men, and of the
Shepherds, who were guided by the same spirit to the Khan and the manger, there
to find the new-born King, Jesus of Nazareth, son of God and Savior of man,
whose birth, life and death were predicted by the prophets and attended with
miraculous manifestations of divine power. When on the fortieth day after His
birth He was presented in the temple, the aged Simeon pronounced Him to be the
Light of Nations and the Glory of Israel. We know little of His early life,
except the remarkable scene in the temple when He was twelve years old. His
teachings were as free as the air, and as widespread as the sunlight. They were
for all classes, and so plain and simple that everyone could understand. He was
baptized of John in the River Jordan, the spirit of God descending upon him like
a dove. He was transfigured in the presence of three of His disciples. When
Moses and Elias appeared to Him from Heaven, His raiment became white and
shining, and His face shone as the sun. His divine mission is evidenced, not
only by His miracles and the supernatural breadth of His power and teaching, but
by the purity of His life, His devotion to the will of the Heavenly Father, and
His unwearied labors and sufferings for the good of man. He chose twelve
apostles to be companions of His ministry and was betrayed into the power of His
enemy by one of these, with the mockery of a friendly salutation. ‘Betrayed by
one, denied by another, abandoned by all. He was carried before the Jewish
priests, .and by them delivered over to the Roman magistrates, who alone had the
power of life and death, and they sent Him forth to be crucified.
Worthy Shepherdess, you will conduct these
sojourners through the tent of the Wise Men and across the plains to the W.H.P.
in the East for final instruction.
W.Shep. conducts Sojourners
around room through the tent of W.Men, to receive their pass, thence to
W.O.S.’s station, in east, turning north on east aisle, receiving pass from
W.O.S., then halt in front of W.H.P., face east. In giving pass they do not take
candidates hands. Each Offices communicates pass in whisper to each Sojourner.
W.Shep.: Worthy High Priestess, I present these sojourners, who have taken our
vow, passed through the tent of the Wise Men, crossed the plains, and come
before you for final instruction.
W.H.P.: The Worthy Shepherdess will now communicate the Hebrew pass which
completes the word.
W.Shep. communicates the pass by
walking in front of the line, then passing back of line to her former position.
W.Shep., in a whisper to each
sojourner: The Hebrew pass is: ...
W.H.P.: Sojourners, you are indeed welcome within our Shrine, and I assure you
that the scenes you have witnessed and what you have heard are of the greatest
importance to us. They mean liberty from sin and death. You have heard the
evidence of a Greek, a Hindu and an Egyptian, who were summoned by the Spirit
from parts of the world far separated, each speaking a different tongue, and
meeting by the guidance of the Spirit in the desert. Each tells his story, yet,
strange as it may seem, they converse in a language understood by all. A star
appears and guides them to the birthplace of our Savior, Whom they acknowledge
and worship. You have heard the wondrous story of the Shepherds, who were
guided, by the same Spirit to the Khan and the manger, where they saw and
worshipped Christ the King, Whom we know to be the Savior and Redeemer of the
world. You have taken our solemn vow, passed through the tent and crossed the
plains, and it now remains for me to invest you with the sign, pass and emblem
of the Order of the White Shrine of Jerusalem. The sign of this degree is given
by ... The answer is given by ... The pass is ... The answer is ... In the dark
the words alone are used. The grip is given by ... Upon entering or retiring
from a Shrine, advance to the center of the room in front of the Noble
Prophetess, face the East and give the sign, retire or be seated as the case may
be. The answer from the chair is given by ... Supreme honors are given by ...
The public sign of honor is given by placing the right hand over the heart and
slightly bowing the head. All officers and members when addressing the Worthy
High Priestess shall rise and give the salutation sign. The colors of the Order
of the White Shrine of Jerusalem are white and yellow. With the assistance of
our Worthy Shepherdess, I will now illustrate the examination test required of
sojourners who desire to visit a Shrine and who are not vouched for.
W.H P. and W.Shep. exemplify sign
together.
W.H.P.: A Shepherd’s staff in the hands of an humble peasant made kings
tremble, conquered the hosts of Pharaoh and directed the children of Israel in
safety in their journey through the wilderness. We trust, my sojourners, you will
ever wear the badge of our Order as a constant reminder of the power of God, and
the humility of the Savior of mankind, His birthplace, the Khan, the manger; His
life, Gethsemane and the Cross.
W.H.P, hands badges to W.Shep.
and W.Guide, who give them to Sojourners.
Sojourners may be seated for
lecture.
W.H.P. may assign the following
lecture as a duty of the A.W.O.S.
(1) Soj.: Behold the city of Bethlehem, humble city of the plain, and yet for
nineteen hundred years its sacred story has been told at firesides, in the
public forum, and, in song and story; and today, as never before, the simple
gospel of the Prince of Peace Shines forth in all its light and glory in all
nations of the world.
(2) Behold alike the Good Shepherd and the Great
Master. Folded in His protecting arms is a stricken lamb. The lamb symbolizes
the weak and helpless. In all ages the lamb has been deemed an emblem of
innocence and purity, teaching us that if we are pure in life and innocent of
wrongdoing, although we may be weak and helpless, in adversity, we shall find a
haven of safety in the protecting arms of Him who proclaimed: “Come Unto Me All
Ye That Labor and Are Heavy Laden and I Will Give You Rest.”
(3) We have a fulfillment of the Savior’s
promise, that He would rise again from the dead. The devoted followers of the
Christ were stricken with wondrous .awe as the Angel pointed to the empty
sepulchre symbolizing His resurrection and our hope of immortality, and as
Christ burst the bands of death and ascended into Heaven, so may we all hope to
rise from the dead and enjoy His blessed fellowship (4), and meeting then with
loved ones who have gone before, in a glorious reunion, we shall then:
“Hand in hand go forth afar, From sphere to
sphere where wondrous Angels are.”
(5) We have the symbol faith. The simple faith of a
Christian at the Cross. We can only silently contemplate the magnitude and power
of this divine faith. Through all the centuries since the lowly Nazarene bore
the burden of man’s sin and grief upon the Cross, His followers have laid
their burdens at the foot of the Cross, and having laid them there they have
risen cheered and comforted, and with renewed faith and hope they have gone
forth to do their Master’s will.
(6) The “Wild Tempestuous Sea” symbolizes the
storms of adversity that sweep over the sea of life. How often are men overtaken
by calamity, or sorrow, or bereavement. The violence of these attacks may be
likened to the billows of the sea which roll unrestrained across the bosom of
the great deep, lashed into a fury by the ungovernable winds of adversity. There
seems to be no harbor nor haven of safety (7), but just before despair
overthrows the reason, Out of the tempestuous sea rises the Rock of Ages, and
the tempest-tossed mariner seizes the protecting arms of the “rock of
safety,” and as the wild waves surge about him joyously sings, “Rock of Ages
Cleft for Me.”
(8) (Note: Scene No. 8 is thrown
on the screen just as the words “Simply to the Cross I Cling” are being
sung.)
(9) The final scene in our lecture portrays the
Ascension of Christ. While on earth He said to His followers: “In my
Father’s House Are Many Mansions, I Go to Prepare a Place for You.” This
promise is as dear to us now as it was to the Galileans nineteen hundred years
ago.
(10) In my Father’s house are many mansions and
there may all devotees of the Order of the White Shrine of Jerusalem hope to
reside. Within its portals we will lay aside all grief and trouble, all agony,
all pain, all discord and confusion. With lightened hearts and brightened hopes
we shall approach the Supreme White Shrine, and grateful lips will sing again
the old sweet song of the Shepherds, “Glory to God in the Highest, and on
Earth Peace, Good Will Toward Men.”
The views we use for this lecture

W.H.P.: My sojourners may Bethlehem’s Star ever guide you through life, and to
the Home Eternal, with the King of Kings in Glory. After having signed our
by-laws you will become members of the Order of the White Shrine of Jerusalem,
entitled to its benefits and subject to its laws.
W.Shep. takes one step to the
east, thence advances south to W.Scribe’s desk. During signing of By-Laws
W.Shep. shall advance west to line three feet west of Queen’s station (east
aisle) then followed by Sojourners and W.Guide, turn north, march on line in
front of W.H P. Halt, face west to hear proclamation.
W.H.P.: Worthy Herald, you will now make the proclamation.
W.H.P., ***, calls up Shrine.
W.H., after taking Banner from
its standard, advances east in line with her station to north side of Altar,
directly back of Third H.M.’s station, where she halts facing east, holding
banner in her right hand, with left hand raised, makes proclamation.
W.H.: By authority vested in me by the Supreme Shrine, and by order of the
Worthy High Priestess, I do now pronounce and declare giving
names duly made and constituted Sojourners
of the Order of the White Shrine of Jerusalem. Proclaim this from the east *
gavel through the tent of the Wise Men *
gavel, and beyond the plains * gavel.
W.H., turning toward Altar,
returns to her station on the same line of march and deposits Banner.
W.K.P.: All sojourners will join me in giving our newly made Sojourners a hearty
welcome. Applause Worthy Shepherdess, you
will conduct these Sojourners to seats.
* seats Shrine.
W.Shep. and W.Guide seat
Sojourners as follows: W.Shep. conducts Sojourners followed by W. Guide to north
thence west to seats east of W.Guide’s station. Bows to Sojourners. W.Shep.
faces west, W.Guide advances to left of W.Shep., both proceed to west aisle,
then south to central line, where W.Shep. changes crook to right hand and
W.Guide to left hand as they turn east to return to stations on line prescribed
after purging Shrine.
As W.Shep. and W.Guide change
crooks in west, King, Queen, W.O.S. and W.Men return to their respective
stations and remain standing until gavel is sounded.
Closing Ceremonies
W.H.P.: Worthy Guardian.
W.Guardian: Worthy High Priestess.
W.H.P.: You will inform the Worthy Guard that we are about to close the Shrine and
direct him to allow no interruption while we are thus engaged.
W.Guardian follows same
instructions as in opening ceremonies and returns to her station in prescribed
manner.
W.Guardian: Worthy Guard, we are about to dose the Shrine and you are directed to
allow no interruptions while we are thus engaged.
W.Guardian: Worthy High Priestess, your order has been obeyed.
W.H.P.: Let us unite in singing our closing ode.
White Shrine Ode cards may be
used or any appropriate song.
W.H.P.: Sojourners, the duties appointed for this Shrine meeting are now nearly
completed, but before we part, let us unite in prayer.
W.C and W.H. approach the Altar
in the same manner herein prescribed and give salutation sign together, W.H.
stepping back to the left of First H.M.
Infinite and benevolent God, the Father of mercies
and the God of all grace, in closing the services of this Shrine we ask Thy
benediction and Thy blessing. Grant that the lessons taught may be ever engraven
on our minds and hearts, and as we go forth to the several duties and
responsibilities of our daily life, may it be to fill the measure of our days
with usefulness, with firmer faith, brighter hopes, greater charity, and a
personal feeling of Thy divine approval. All of which we ask through the Name of
Thine Only Begotten Son, our dear Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Amen.”
Sojourners: Amen.
Without instruction, W.C. places
her right hand over her heart anti with left hand removes the Emblem from the
Bible, each part separately, in the same manner as prescribed in the opening.
When the Star is in position at left of Bible, bring hands to corners of Bible,
raising first the left side, then the right, holding Bible upright with hand
until left hand can be lowered to the left hand corner, in order to place Bible
in position, in center of Altar. When Bible is placed, hsnds are lowered to
side. W.H. steps in line with W.C. facing east; both bow.
W.C and W.H. return to stations
in same manner as heretofore prescribed.
W.H.P.: The Color Bearer and escort with the National Emblem will retire.
When Color Bearer and escort is
instructed to retire Flag, they will march in single file to east aisle, thence
to former position, facing east. Color Bearer ascends dais, takes Flag from
standard, steps to east aisle, passing between escorts, takes two steps west.
Escorts turn toward Color Bearer as he passes, face west All three in open
formation walk to north aisle, proceed west to line west of First H.M., turn
left, walk on a diagonal line to south aisle, face west and carry Flag through
ante-room door. When Color Bearer reaches point west of First H.M. where turn is
made, W.Guardian will approach ante-room door, give raps and open door for
escorts to retire. W.Guardian takes one step backward, pivots and faces aisle,
places right hand over heart and stands at attention until Flag has passed
through door. W.Guardian closes the door and returns to her station. Three
H.M.’s face north as Flag passes, facing east when escort makes turn west of
First H.M. Escorts to colors when escorting Flag do not place right hand over
heart. Color Bearer should have right hand above left when carrying Flag. All
Sojourners remain at attention, with hand over heart, until Flag has been
retired.
W.H.P.: Sojourners, we are about to separate and assume the duties and cares
incumbent on mankind. May the lessons portrayed in our Shrine and the Divine
example taught us by Him who trod the wine-press of life alone, better fit us to
discharge them. Sojourners, farewell.
Sojourners: Farewell.
W.H.P.: I now declare ... Shrine, No. ... closed. Worthy Guardian.
W.Guardian: Worthy High Priestess.
WH.P.: You will so instruct the Worthy Guard.
W.Guardian opens door: without
raps.
W.Guardian: Worthy Guard, the Shrine is now closed.
W.Guardian: Worthy High Priestess, the Worthy Guard is informed.
W.H.P.:
(*)
W.H.P. may have any retiring
march she desires.
